Annual Vacation Leave

The vacation year for Non-Union Continuing and Temporary Employees is from July 1 to June 30.

Full-time

Continuing and temporary employees are entitled to an annual paid vacation based on:

  • Employees starting after July 1 will get a pro-rated vacation entitlement based on 1/12 of their annual entitlement for each full month they work during the rest of the vacation year.
  • Eligible Employees can continue to collect vacation entitlement during the top-up period of maternity or parental leave. All vacation schedules must first be approved by your supervisor.

Part-time

Part-time continuing and temporary employees receive a prorated vacation entitlement of a full-time Employee based on their hours of work (which will be considered accrued over the vacation year). 

Carryforward

For eligible Non-Union Employees, any unused vacation at the end of the vacation year will be carried forward to the following vacation year and managed in consultation with the employee’s Immediate Supervisor.

Vacation During Leave

Vacation is earned while on paid leave, with the earned vacation proportional to the length of the leave.

No vacation shall be earned during:

  1. leave without pay
  2. disability leave
  3. that portion of partial leave for which no salary is paid

Non-Union Casual and Term Employees

Non-Union Casual and Term Employees will receive vacation pay at the rate of 4% of their total earnings for each pay period.

When the employee has achieved 5 years of continuous employment they will receive vacation pay at the rate of 6%. According to Employment Standards, any breaks in employment of less than 3 months are counted in the period of continuous employment.

Annual Vacation Leave for Regular + Auxiliary Salary Employees

Vacation credits for a full-time employee will be earned for each hour of service and credited at the end of each pay period.

Annual Vacation Leave for Other Support Employees

Casual employees receive vacation pay at the rate of 4% of their total earnings (exclusive of overtime and call back compensation) for each pay period. Temporary employees will also be entitled to take up to 3 weeks of time off without pay as vacation following their first 12 months worked.

Auxiliary Hourly and Apprentices receive vacation pay at the rate of 6% of their total earnings (exclusive of overtime and call back compensation) for each pay period. The employee will also be entitled to take up to three weeks of time off without pay as vacation in each 12 month period.

Supplementary Tradespersons receive vacation pay as specified in the respective trade union contract.
