To Reconcile Once Again

Symphonic Wind Ensemble and University of Alberta Concert Band

March 26, 2023
3:00 PM | Winspear Centre

The themes of this concert include Reconciliation – specifically and metaphorically.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is performing music related to Indigenous themes, including I Lost My Talk by John Estacio based on the poems of Residential school survivor Rita Joe. They are also playing Peace Dancer by Jodie Blackshaw based on the children's book by the same name by Indigenous author/illustrator Roy Henry Vickers and Robert Budd. It is based on a legend that tells the story of how humans have lost their way and is a reminder of the reverence for nature and all living things. It states in the score that "moral rights" have been granted to link this composition with the book and visuals. The ensemble will also play Arctic Fire by Robert Buckley - a piece that depicts the beauty of the aurora borealis.

The University of Alberta Concert Band will be performing various selections including Stormbreak by Jim Casella focusing on the themes of nature and the evolving rhythms that can be heard within the environment around us, as well as Lightning Field by John Mackey, inspired by the man-made lightning storms within the New Mexico desert and the intensity that thunderstorms bring to the earth. The ensemble will be playing Incantation and Dance by John Chance, depicting the magic and mystery within the secretive world of rituals, in addition to the piece, Serenity, by Ola Gjeilo, which finds intimacy and stillness through the heartfelt setting of O Magnum Mysterium. Also on the program is Our Cast Aways by Julie Giroux, a piece inspired by, and dedicated to, all of the rescued animals and humanity's job to care for all the living things on earth.

This concert is a part of the Department of Music's 2022-2023 "Music at the Winspear" Series.
