On March 7 in the Telus Centre atrium International research interns from around the world presented the research efforts they have undertaken in collaboration with Alberta professors.

On March 7, International research interns from around the world presented the research efforts they have undertaken in collaboration with Alberta professors at the Telus Centre atrium.

Thanks to the University of Alberta Internship and Scholarship programs. Every year, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies has the pleasure to host international research interns, this year four participated and presented their research in the UAlberta International Research event.

Cassia Bianca M. Kato, BA in Marketing at University of Sao Paulo, is a UARE intern and currently working with Sathya Rao, Associate Professor, on her research "Canadian Minority Media Database". She mentioned that her experience as a research intern was gratifying. For more information about her research please visit the Canadian Minority Media Database site or Facebook account.

"My experience as a research intern at the UofA is really rewarding for me, as I could learn more about Canadian culture as well as apply some marketing theory in the project. Learning about minority media in Canada made me realize how much has been done in this research area and makes me want to contribute even more to promote the Canadian Minority Media Database - I am grateful for having this experience as an intern and I intend to continue researching other interesting topics in my graduate studies." Bruno Soares dos Santos, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, is a UARE intern and currently working with Odile Cisneros, Associate Professor, on his research "Green Poetry, Green World: A view on Ecocriticism and Ecopoetry." He found his experience provided him with new opportunities.

"This research experience has been an amazing opportunity to know more about the world in general. I am meeting wonderful new authors, new books and new people. The days I am spending in Canada and the UofA will for sure be in my memories for the rest of my life." Bruno Soares dos Santos

María Fernanda Mosquera, Universidad del Rosario, Bogotá Colombia, is a UARE intern and currently working with Odile Cisneros, Associate Professor, on her research "Voices of Nature". She stated that participating in the symposium has been extremely rewarding.

"I have loved being part of this unique experience. The research experience at the University of Alberta has been a wonderful opportunity to approach new perspectives for learning more about the relationships between literature and environment. Reading the ecopoems has provided me with new ways of understanding the environmental problems that have affected different countries of Latin American." Maria Fernanda Mosquera

Bruno's and María Fernanda's research is part of the project "ecopoesia.com: An Online Resource on Literature and Environment in Latin America."

Luciana Molina Queiroz, Universidade Estadual de Campinas - Brazil, is an ELAP intern and currently working with Odile Cisneros, Associate Professor, on her research "The Disappearance of Literature as a Negative Utopia: Tensions between Political Praxis and Aesthetic Autonomy in Contemporary Art". She mentioned that she has a broaden perspective about her research thanks to the event.

"Talking about my research to different people that visited the symposium was a great opportunity to enlarge my perspectives about my research topic and my understanding of university. My experience at University of Alberta was even better than I imagined when I left my hometown in Brazil. Many thanks to ELAP, my supervisor Odile Cisneros, and the university staff." Luciana Molina Queiroz

Our department is looking forward to seeing the results of these interesting research projects and to receive more international research interns in the years to come. We also thank our wonderful academic staff who support these interns with their research.
