Arts mentorship program information

Starting University is hard, really hard! The only thing that makes it even harder is starting it alone! For incoming students who find themselves starting their University of Alberta Faculty of Arts program for the first time, we extend the opportunity to apply to become a mentee and be paired with a mentor who shares their personal background, program of study, interests, and other important characteristics to help ease their transition into our campus community.

Mentor volunteers are upper-year Arts students with a passion for helping others, building community, and self-improvement! Mentors and up to 5 mentees are grouped for the Fall and Winter Terms of a single academic year, and gain access to monthly mentorship program events and meetups, new opportunities, and consistent Arts Undergraduate Student Services team supports.

Arts Mentors

We're looking to create a group of 20 upper-year student mentors from a diversity of academic programs, personal interests, identities, and more to make up our first-ever Arts Student Mentorship Program! Be the mentor that you needed when you started your UAlberta journey while getting involved on campus!

We're accepting applications until May 3rd at 11:59 p.m. or until we've confirmed a full team of 20 mentors!


MENTOR BENEFITS:

  1. Receive a unique University of Alberta reference letter for their time invested and training received.
  2. Gain access to on-campus professional development and events.
  3. Meet and spend time with other students from the Faculty of Arts outside of the classroom.
  4. Make a meaningful difference in the lives of incoming University of Alberta Arts students, and be a part of building a welcoming and encouraging campus community.
MENTOR EXPECTATIONS:
  1. Volunteering a minimum of 5 hours per month from September-May (between conversations/meet-ups with mentees, attending community events, attending Mentor meetings, professional development progress, etc).
  2. Be proactive about keeping in touch with your mentees! Reach out often and find opportunities to connect, your active engagement with mentees will make all the difference in their experience.
  3. Try your best to attend our Mentorship Program events, drop-in sessions, and meetings. If you can't make it you can always let us know! A mandatory orientation process is part of this.
  4. Tracking your hours honestly and consistently is an important part of this program and mentors are responsible for self-managing in this regard.
  5. Mentors must maintain respectful, appropriate, and well-mannered relationships with their mentees at all times (and in accordance with the University's Code of Student Behaviour).
