Associate professor Lukas Roth has received a very prestigious McCalla Professorship for 2020-2021. The McCalla Professors are outstanding academics who have made (and continue to make) significant contributions to the integration of teaching and research, and educational leadership.

A team of undergraduate students from the Alberta School of Business won the 2020 Battle of the Prairies Real Estate Development Challenge on March 12 in Calgary.

This year was the 6th Annual Battle of the Prairies (formally known as the Battle of Alberta) with the University of Alberta School of Business competing against the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business and the University of Manitoba. The Battle of Alberta started as a real estate development case competition sponsored by NAIOP Edmonton and NAIOP Calgary; each year the winning team is awarded the Graeme Young Gold Shovel.

The Alberta School of Business and the Haskayne School of Business are now tied 3-3 over the six-year history of the challenge, which originated in Edmonton. Alberta School of Business MBA and BCom students participate in the real estate challenge each year as part of the Real Estate Development (BUEC 457/613) course offered each Winter Semester.


Kim Tinana and Jacqueline Wong are the winners of this year's Canada's Top Students competition, hosted by Scotiabank. The two undergraduate students competed against 24 other top students across Canada for bragging rights, as well as money to be paid toward tuition.


PhD student Rory Waisman is a finalist in this year's 3MT (3 Minute Thesis) competition. The Three Minute Thesis is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentations and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research projects to a non-specialist audience. This year, the competition will be held online at uab.ca/3MT from April 20-24, with the winner announced on April 24.


2020 CPA Business Challenge

Winning team of the 2020 CPA Business Challenge

Owen Shen, Kareem Hamdon, Camille McConkey and Jamie Libon won 1st place at the CPA Business Challenge sponsored by the CPA Educational Foundation. The team took home the first place prize of $10,000.


Xiaowen Zhang is the recipient of this year's Graduate Student Teaching Award for the School of Business. The Graduate Student Teaching Awards annually recognize outstanding graduate teaching assistants in each faculty at the University of Alberta.


Sarah Fong, Mahek Punjabi, Stephanie Keats and coach Ross Bradford placed 2nd at the HRC West 2020 competition hosted by the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of Alberta (CBHRAB). HRC West is western Canada's premiere Human Resources case competition.


Harman Dhatt, Lindsey Walsh, Emilie Richards, Andy Ton and Nick Ambrozic won the Prairies Final of the CFA Institute's research challenge. The team will be heading to New York in April to compete at the Americas Regional.

L'Oréal Brandstorm case competition team

Martina Elegino, Makena Kigunda and Katia Wlasichuk came in second place at the national finals of the L'Oréal Brandstorm case competition in Montreal. It was the first time in the 28 years of the competition that a U of A team made the finals.


The School's 5 Days for the Homeless crew were able to raise $5,650 for Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) before having to shut down due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19. The charity is now run at 23 universities across Canada and has raised over $2M for at-risk youth.

Alumnus and current MBA student Peter Keith ('18 BCom) has been named a Top 30 Under 30 by Foodservice and Hospitality Magazine. Keith is the owner of Meuwly's Artisan Food Market in Edmonton.
