How to Apply

Application for graduate admission

Students must complete an application for graduate admission through the online system. Before applying, please read the instructions below carefully.

Upload all of the following documentation with your application by the deadline listed below. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

  1. Transcripts
Upload up-to-date, official transcripts (both in English and the language of origin, if applicable) from all post-secondary institutions you have attended, including for incomplete degrees, individual courses, and courses that were transferred to another institution. Digital transcripts may be accepted as long as they are official and meet FGSR requirements. Scan the front and back of paper transcripts (see Application Requirements for Academic Documents).

Note: For transcripts from the University of Alberta only, you may upload up-to-date, unofficial transcripts.

  1. Degree Certificates
Upload official degree certificates for all post-secondary degrees you have completed (both in English and the language of origin, if applicable). You don’t need to upload a degree certificate if the corresponding transcript clearly states the degree has been awarded and the date when it was awarded.

Note: If your current degree program is not yet complete at the time when you apply and you will complete it before the term you apply to, you do not need to upload the relevant degree certificate.

  1. English Language Proficiency Scores
English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Alberta. All applicants must be proficient in English prior to admission. Proficiency is demonstrated by one of the following:

      • Possession of a degree from an institution recognized by the University of Alberta and where the language of instruction is English (see Recognized English Language Countries/Institutions). No additional documentation is required.
      • Possession of a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English but is not on the list of recognized English-language countries/institutions. Upload proof that the instruction for the degree was in English.
      • A minimum overall Academic IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 on each band. Upload a copy of the score sheet.
      • Applicants may demonstrate English Language Proficiency through confirmation of sufficient English language coursework at the secondary school level from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden & Switzerland (see English Language Proficiency: Secondary School Coursework).

Note: The Department of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) reserve the right to require further demonstration of English Language proficiency.

  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  3. Two References
Provide email addresses for 2 referees. The application system will send email reference requests to your referees after you submit your application. Ensure you enter the correct email address before submitting your application. Accompanying reference letters must be in PDF format on the official letterhead of the referee’s institution or company. Professors, teachers, or employers are acceptable referees.

Note: Medical residents must use their Program Director as 1 of the 2 required referees. This reference must indicate support for the applicant to enroll in a graduate program concurrent with their residency.

  4. Statement of Interest (1 or 2 pages)
Summarize your background, your interest in our program, and your career goals.

  5. Letter from Supervisor
Provide a letter from your prospective University of Alberta supervisor confirming their agreement to supervise you and describing the sources of funding for your stipend and research program.

Note: Do not submit an application before you have a confirmed supervisor.

  6. Application Fee
A 135 CAD, non-refundable application fee is required. Payments can be made using a valid credit card only. The university accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discovery Card. If you have questions about the fee, please contact grad.webadm@ualberta.ca.
