After Hours Emergencies

You may connect directly with Police, Fire and Ambulance by dialing 911.

University of Alberta Protective Services can be reached at 780.492.5050 24 hours a day.

Our residences are very secure, but thefts do occur from time to time. Follow the tips below and prevent being victimized:

  • Lock your door when you are leaving your room, apartment or house for any length of time.
  • In intercom-access buildings, don't let strangers into the building, even if they claim to be a resident. It may seem rude not to hold the door open, but we'd rather you be safe than sorry!
  • If you have friends coming over to visit, ensure they are aware of the rules in advance. Ask them to use the buzzers to gain entry, rather than expecting residents to let them in.
  • If you notice someone in the building who appears confused, approach them and ask if they need assistance. Report a suspicious person to Protective Services 780.492.5050.

Residence Emergency Response Plan

Ancillary Services has developed the emergency response procedures to inform community members on the appropriate response to the potential emergencies that may occur within residences.

Fire Safety

Fire alarms may sound differently depending on which residence you live in. You can listen to variations of different fire alarms online here:

Fire Alarm & Siren Sounds

Familiarize yourself with the Emergency Evacuation Signs located in your unit. When you hear a fire alarm, immediately follow these directions to the nearest exit and Muster Point:

You MUST leave the building even if you believe the alarm is a drill. Do not return to the building until emergency services have given you permission to return. Your safety is the most important factor - don't take the chance the alarm isn't a drill.

Fire and Safety Equipment

Fire alarm equipment (smoke detectors, pull stations, sprinklers, fire hoses, extinguishers, etc.) are there for your protection. Tampering with them can result in many consequences, even expulsion from the University or criminal charges.

Your Unit

For your safety, the following items are NOT ALLOWED in residence:

  • Room heating devices (including kerosene/oil/alcohol lamps)
  • Candles, incense, fireworks, sparklers, etc.
  • Flammable and combustible liquids
  • Gasoline-powered items such as motorcycles, tools
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Extension cords over six feet in length
  • Any devices that replace, add to, or interfere with any room or building apparatus (light dimmer switches, ceiling fan, etc.)
  • Combustible lamp shades or fixture covers
  • Guns or knives, including air guns, paintball guns, hunting rifles or other weapons
  • Major appliances that do not belong in your unit

Do not overload electrical receptacles!

Watch out for fire exits in your unit and make sure they aren't blocked with furniture or belongings.

Smoke detectors have been installed in all units. Report malfunctions to the Residence Services office. If the detector begins to indicate trouble by continuously beeping, please complete a maintenance request immediately and Maintenance will replace the battery.
