Curricular-Based Community Engaged Learning

curricular-based-community-engaged-learning-icon.png Description: A structured learning experience, embedded in a course, in partnership with the community for the purpose of supporting priorities identified by the community and enhancing students' disciplinary knowledge.

Examples: 

  • Course based Riipen projects.
  • Community Service Learning (CSL) courses.
Curricular-Based Cultural Immersion

curricular-based-cultural-immersion-icon.png Description: Study term, course, or formalized program that is completed at an approved, external host institution. The goal of these activities is to facilitate student experience in, and support exposure to, different cultural, economic, and socio-political environments. 

Examples:

  • Study Abroad
  • Smithsonian Institute
  • Cortona
  • e3 program
Faculty Partnerships

faculty-partnerships-icon.png Description: A structured learning experience where students work directly with faculty on faculty focused initiatives. The outcome of these initiatives are internally focused and are designed primarily for the benefit of the institution and its stakeholders.

Examples:

  • Research Assistants (RAs)
  • Teaching Assistants (TAs) excluding Proctors and Markers
  • Online learning assistance (OLAs)
  • Special Project Assistants (SPSs)
  • Undergraduate Student Research Initiative
Organization Partnerships
organization-partnerships-icon.png Description: A structured learning experience, not embedded in a course, in partnership with an external partner on a project sponsored or initiated by the partner. The project addresses specific questions set with the partner and produces new knowledge relevant to the student's field of study. 
  • This may also include activities designed to prepare students for eligibility to participate in the aforementioned project; for example, internal case competitions that determine eligibility to participate in future case competitions.

Examples:

  • School of Retailing Internship
  • Riipen projects such as Riipen level up - that are NOT embedded in course requirements
  • Design Jams
  • Open Challenges
  • Case Competitions
Campus Leadership

campus-leadership-icon.png Description: Student leadership positions with Alberta School of Business Student Clubs, with registered University of Alberta Student clubs, or with the UofA’s Student Union.

NB. Student clubs must be in good standing with the SU.

Examples:

  • President, VP’s and other leadership/executive positions with student clubs.
Training and Professional Development

training-and-professional-development-icon.png Description:  Activities that foster professional growth in students that are not organized as part of course requirements.

Examples:

  • Alberta School of Business supported, affiliated, or coordinated Workshops, Technical Training, Conferences, Seminars.
  • Other training activities whose intended purpose is to foster professional growth that are not part of course requirements.
Athletics
athletics-icon.png Description: Formal, university-sanctioned Bears/Pandas team positions.

NB. Does not currently include extracurricular/intramural and/or non-campus activities.
Campus Community Engagement
campus-community-engagement-icon.png Description: Volunteer roles (that are non-executive positions), for activities organized and facilitated by the University or student organizations,  intended to foster engagement in the campus community.
Self-Validated Activities

self-validated-activities-icon.png Description: These are activities that encompass any combination of the above however these events are entirely off-campus with no direct connection to the campus community. For instance off-campus volunteer positions, training sessions, or sanctioned athletic participation. 

  • Self-validated activities are not overseen by a UofA staff, Faculty or Student Organization, as such the purpose of these activities, time commitment and learning components cannot be validated by the School of Business. They are therefore considered to be self-reported entries and rely on the ethical judgement of the participant to determine whether they are suitable for inclusion on their Co-Curricular Record.
