Community Partnerships

Partners in health

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is our key provincial health research partner. As Canada's first and largest province-wide, integrated health system, AHS delivers health services to over four million Albertans, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. Our students receive clinical education in AHS partner hospitals, facilities and community locations. AHS Strategic Clinical Networks connect people who are passionate and knowledgeable about specific areas of health, challenging them to find new and innovative ways of delivering care to provide better quality, better outcomes and better value for every Albertan.

Teaching Hospitals and Research Partners

University of Alberta Hospital (UAH)

One of Canada's leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating over 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada.

It's also home to the Stollery Children's Hospital. This "hospital within a hospital" concept allows the two facilities to share resources and equipment while meeting the specialized needs of all its patients. The two facilities provide diagnostic and treatment services for adults and children, including specialized services in cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, renal, critical care, emergency and trauma care and a state-of the art burn unit.

Based at the UAH, AHS's organ and tissue transplant program is recognized as a national leader in both success rates and transplant volumes. The Comprehensive Tissue Centre supports the hospital's transplant and surgery programs, and is one of only two fully accredited multi-tissue banks in Canada.

Stollery Children's Hospital

A full-service pediatric hospital and centre for complex pediatric care and research, including a 24/7 emergency department.

The Stollery is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta, and has among the highest inpatient volumes of any children's hospital in Canada. The Stollery's neonatal intensive care unit (located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital) supports the most complex newborn pediatric patients in northern Alberta.

Royal Alexandra Hospital

General and specialized medical and surgical health services.

As one of Alberta's largest surgical facilities, it plays a lead role in the expansion and development of minimally invasive surgery, a rapidly evolving technique that helps patients heal and return to productive lives faster.

Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital

The largest freestanding, comprehensive tertiary rehabilitation hospital in Canada.

With nearly 80,000 patient visits annually, the hospital helps patients living with illness, injury or chronic conditions gain or regain their independence.

Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (MAZ)

One of Canada's most environmentally advanced medical facilities.

The MAZ provides state of the art cardiac services to the most complex and chronic cardiac patients, including diagnostic and non-surgical treatment, complex surgery, and in/out patient care. The hospital serves adult and pediatric patients from Alberta, western and northern Canada, and is home to the Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS), a translational research centre with scientists and clinicians working in vascular biology, imaging and intervention, and critical trials and outcomes.

Cross Cancer Institute

A comprehensive cancer centre and a leader in innovative cancer research, prevention, treatment and care initiatives across Alberta and beyond.

The Cross is home to two different but very valuable cancer fighting tools:

  • State-of-the-art PET/CT scanners that can spot much smaller tumours than previously possible-a vital tool the help identify and treat many types of cancer. Compared to conventional scanners, the PET/CT technology can screen 3x as many patients, meaning earlier detection and better treatment options.
  • A world-class tumour bank, whose thousands of specimens are invaluable for research. An example of the bank's vital role is decoding the complex genetic makeup of the hard-to-treat, deadliest form of breast cancer (by U of A researchers Sambasivaro Damaraju and John Mackey) that paved the way for new drug development and more effective treatments.

Lois Hole Hospital for Women

Located within the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The Lois Hole Hospital for Women provides expert patient care for women of all ages and in all stages of life.

Community and Rural Teaching Hospitals

The University of Alberta also partners with community and rural teaching hospitals.

That includes the Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton, the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray, the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre

Supports clinical trials and research.

Edmonton Health Clinic Academy

Changing how outpatient care, health sciences education and research is delivered in Alberta.

The Academy offers specialized space and simulation technology to prepare students and healthcare practitioners for 21st-century, team-based health care. The building houses simulation labs, specialized and critical care suites including:

  • Critical care room - simulates an ICU, NICU, hospital emergency, labour/delivery room, operating room or procedure room. The room can be equipped with high fidelity mannequins and/or standardized patients.
  • Bariatric/specialized care suite - simulations involving patients with chronic conditions and special needs, including bariatric care, neurological conditions, and reduced functional mobility. The suite can accommodate people with severe obesity and is used extensively for (bariatric) research, teaching and specialized training in this area.
  • Smart Condo™ - simulates home visits allowing healthcare professionals to increase their understanding of assisted living devices and practicing in a patient's personal space. The Condo supports the development of smart technology for remote health care and monitoring.
