Purpose:

To provide students with an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to and learn about the economic environment and business practices in China in an experiential way. The learning focus will be on the current business conditions and international management issues relating to China.

Course Description:

This course introduces students to the business conditions, culture and practices in China. Issues such as government-business relations, economic trends, current business trends, and doing business in China will be covered. BUEC 648 (China) is meant as an introductory course on the PRC and will focus not only on economic and business practices, but will put a heavy emphasis on the cultural, historical and social influences that shape those practices. It is intended to provide perspective to cross-cultural business and benefit those without a strong existing understanding or background of those aspects of China.

Students will be required to examine a topic of personal interest through a research paper.

Course Content:

1. Lectures from course instructor during the semester

2. Research paper at the end of semester

3. Participation in tour activities

4. Lectures from host Chinese partners during the tour

Course Schedule:

Lectures and preparatory sessions for the classroom portion of this course (BUEC 648) will be scheduled in the Winter 2020 academic term (January - April) and will meet approximately once or twice a month at the Alberta School of Business. All participants will be expected to attend these sessions without exception. The on-site study tour portion of the course will be in mainland China in May, 2020.
