Costs

As a regular University of Alberta Winter term course, standard University of Alberta tuition and fees will apply to BUEC 648. Tuition must be paid directly to the university in the same manner and according to the same payment deadlines as all normal tuition payments are made for Winter term at the UofA. There will be additional cost of the International Study Tour to China which is to be determined and will be communicated in advance of registration.

 

The cost of the Study Tour to China will include:

  • Round-trip international airfare
    Edmonton to China & returning to Edmonton - individual participants will be responsible for any difference in fares due to changes to return flight(s)

  • All internal transportation
    includes Beijing to Xi'an, Xi'an to Hangzhou & Xi'an to Shanghai flights/trains, plus chartered buses to all program activities

  • Accommodations
    arranged at local hotels and/or partner Chinese government or academic housing facilities; shared

  • Meals
    group meals arranged by the Study Tour coordinators including those at restaurants and host partners; students will have some opportunities to buy individual meals on their own

  • Lectures
    from professors for the Communist Party, Chinese Government officials, academics and/or company executives

  • Company visits
    at a variety of domestic & international companies across multiple industries in Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou & Shanghai

  • Cultural excursions
    trips to Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors Museum, etc.

  • Site admissions
    entrance fees for above, plus the Summer Palace, a traditional water village, temple visits, and other outings

  • Other non-optional planned group activities while in China
    pre-arranged activities we take part in as a group which participants are expected to attend are also covered

The cost of the Study Tour to China will NOT include:

  • UofA Winter term tuition and fees for a *3 credit course
  • individual travel after the conclusion of the study tour or as a result of deviation from the default return schedule/route
  • Any personal preparations required for a student to participate (apart from visa application & fees*)
    *a group visa application for standard entry into China will be done through the School of Business and fees for which will be included in the regular Study Tour costs. However, individual participants will be responsible for obtaining or renewing their passports and any associated fees.
  • gifts, souvenirs or other personal purchases in China
  • individual meals on free days, when participants are allowed to explore on their own or other instances when not arranged as a group
  • any other personal expense not explicitly covered above or which falls outside the realm of the standard provisions of the Study Tour arrangements

The additional cost of the 2019 China Study Tour will be:

$2,950** per student

The original cost per participant, before scholarships and other funding support, is set at $4,500**. However, thanks to a generous grant from the University of Alberta China Institute as well as an international travel bursary from the School of Business Undergraduate Programs Office, the out-of-pocket cost to participants for the Study Tour arrangements has been greatly reduced. We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the China Institute for their longstanding support of this course and contributions to make it accessible and affordable to students.

 

**The course portion (BUEC 444) is scheduled in the Winter term and standard University of Alberta tuition and fees for a 3 credit course apply in addition to the above cost.
