Message from the Dean

Welcome to the 114th year of the University of Alberta, and the 107th year of the Alberta School of Business. What started out as a small cohort of women and men in a remote prairie town has transformed into a world-class university with a global family of more than 290,000 alumni, over 30,000 of whom are graduates of the School of Business.

Questions about orientation

How do I know if I am attending orientation on August 28 or August 29?
When you register for orientation, you will select which date you prefer to attend. You will receive a copy of your orientation registration form via email once you submit it.
What can I expect at orientation?

The New Student Orientation welcomes new Business students to the Alberta School of Business. You will be introduced to the exciting opportunities and resources in the program to enhance your student experience. You will have the chance to meet our Dean and Associate Deans and your peers, and participate in some fun activities with your fellow BCom students.

There is also an additional one-hour orientation option for international BCom students that follows the main orientation event. International students can sign up for this session by selecting this option on the BCom Student Orientation RSVP form.

What do I need to bring for the day?
Please bring your picture ID for orientation sign-in. Additional instructions and a more detailed agenda will be emailed to you a few days in advance of the event.
I’ve never been on campus before. How will I know how to find the Alberta School of Business building?

You can use this map to find where the Alberta School of Business building is located.

Questions about courses

Can I take Fall term courses that are scheduled at the same time?

No. You cannot register for courses which are scheduled at the same time.

Will classes be held in-person in Fall 2022?
Classes will be held in-person for Fall 2022 as the University has returned to regular scheduling practices.
How can I tell if my course will be offered online or in-person?

In Bear Tracks, courses and course components, such as seminars or labs, with in-person delivery are shown within student registration. For remote delivery, the Location appears as remote. Please view our 2022-23 Course Calendar webpage for more information.

General Questions

What grading scheme will be used?

Courses will be graded using letter grades unless the course was previously CR/NC/F (for example, WKEXP). All GPAs will be calculated on a 4-point scale. Please see the Registrar’s Office website / this link for more information on the grading system.

Where can I find information about campus life for Fall 2022?

The U of A has a website on Campus Life in Fall 2022 where you can find information on everything from virtual advising to computing requirements to student services.

Please also explore Bear’s Den which includes info and links for all of the U of A’s student groups.

Information about Alberta School of Business student groups can be found on our website. 

The Students’ Union website also includes information on upcoming campus events.

How can I access the library?

What is the What If/Advisement Report and how do I use it?
Where can I find information for International Students?

Please visit the International Student Services (ISS) website. You can find information on study permits, tuition, fees, services and support for international students. Advising appointments for international students can be booked with ISS here.

How can I participate in case competitions?

The Alberta School of Business student clubs host numerous case competitions throughout the year that are open to all undergraduate students. Each club will have details about how you will participate in their competitions.
