Am I Eligible?

As a UAlberta student, you can participate in an Education Abroad program if you meet the eligibility requirements below.

Some institutions may also have their own set requirements, such as a higher GPA than the minimum indicated below. You'll find this information in the Program Finder.

Exchange and Summer Programs

You must:

  • Be registered as a full-time UAlberta student
  • Complete at least 12 credits by the application deadline (15 credits if you're in the Faculty of Science)
  • Complete at least 18-30 credits (2 terms of full-time status) at UAlberta before going abroad
  • Have an admission GPA of 2.5 calculated (at the application deadline) on all university-transferable coursework completed in the most recent two terms of study if they contain a minimum of 24 credits. If those two terms contain less than 24 credits, all work in the next most recent term(s) is included in the calculation until the minimum total of 24 credits is reached. For applicants who have attempted less than 24 credits of transferable post-secondary work, the admission GPA is based on all university or university transfer credits attempted to a minimum of 12 credits (or 15 credits if you're in the Faculty of Science). The admission GPA requirement is also subject to the further, faculty-specific eligibility requirements explained below:
    • Business students must complete at least the first year of studies at the Alberta School of Business before going on an exchange.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 on the most recent Fall/Winter terms while a U of A Business student is required but permission may be granted based on Fall term grades averaging 3.0 and higher.
    • Law students require a cumulative and current GPA of 2.7
    • Engineering students require a cumulative 3.3 GPA in in the last four academic terms to go abroad (can apply after three terms)

Keep in mind that most courses offered during the summer are at the undergraduate level. Graduate students are still eligible to apply.

UAlberta alumni and staff are also eligible to apply for many of the Summer Abroad Programs
