Go Abroad without the Long Term Commitment!

Short-term programs generally take place during the Spring/Summer semester and allow students to travel to a new country/university and take one to three courses at a partner institution. Programs range in length from 3 - 6 weeks throughout May-August

The advantages of Short-term programs include:

  • Takes place during the summer so it doesn't interrupt your academic program
  • Cost of programs generally includes tuition, accommodation, some meals, and extracurricular activities
  • Short term in length so you can still travel before or after the program. OR work during the Spring/Summer to save for your program abroad or upcoming Fall semester at UAlberta
  • It's possible to be strategic in your program/location choice to maximize credit transfer
  • Funding Available through the Individual Award

Eligibility:

To be eligible to participate in a Short-Term Program you must:

  • Be registered as a full-time UAlberta student
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a 2.7 GPA in your most recently completed Fall or Winter term at UAlberta
    ○ Business students require a cumulative and current GPA of 3.0
    (calculated from the point of admission into the School of Business) at
    the time of the exchange application deadline
    ○ Law students require a cumulative and current GPA of 2.7
    ○ Engineering students require a cumulative 3.3 GPA in the last four academic terms to go abroad (can apply after three terms)
  • Complete at least 12 credits by the abroad application deadline (15 credits if you're in the Faculty of Science)
  • Complete at least 18-30 credits (2 terms of full-time status) at UAlberta before going abroad

Keep in mind that most courses offered during the summer are at the undergraduate level. Graduate students are still eligible to apply.

UAlberta alumni and staff are also eligible to apply for many of the Summer Abroad Programs
