Funding gives cancer research a boost

Cancer Research Society supports five research projects within the faculty

Amy Hewko - 13 November 2015

The Cancer Research Society is invested in research conducted at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, as made evident by the most recent Operating Grants results announcement on Oct. 21.

Five researchers-Michael Hendzel in the Department of Oncology, Sarah Hughes in the Department of Medical Genetics, Nadia Jahroudi in the Department of Medicine, Cheng-Han Lee in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, and Alvaro Osornio Vargas in the Department of Pediatrics-were successful in their grant applications, each claiming approximately $120,000 over two years. While most of the projects were funded solely by the Cancer Research Society, Osornio Vargas' grant was funded in partnership with Read for the Cure and Jahroudi's grant was funded in partnership with Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.

From mapping carcinogenic emissions in Canada to optimizing therapy at the molecular level, these five projects have the potential to impact cancer care at the provincial and national level.

"Having such a diverse group of projects receive funding truly showcases the breadth of activities and the quality of cancer research conducted within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry," says David Evans, vice-dean of research. "I was very pleased to hear of this cohort's success and I hope our faculty members are equally successful in the next competition."

The next competition for Cancer Research Society Operating Grants begins soon: Dec. 7 marks the deadline to submit letters for intent. The full application will be available online on Dec. 18.
