Overview:
The goal of this elective is to connect students with different disability-focused communities so that they may better understand the unique challenges faced by the members of these equity-seeking groups. Please note that this elective portfolio is NEW for this year and we hope to expand the Disability Health elective to connect students with other disability-focused communities. We welcome any suggestions that students may have.
Objectives:
Students who complete the minimum elective hours required will be able to
  • Demonstrate and understanding of:
    • The equity challenges faced by patients with different accessibility needs
    • Their responsibility as a future physician to promote an atmosphere of inclusivity for patients with disabilities
    • How building rapport with equity-seeking groups can improve the quality of care they provide
  • Critically examine their biases towards people with disabilities, and how they as a future physician can take steps to provide equitable and accessible care
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the use of “people-first” language can help to remove stigma and historical barriers to care
Additional Notes:

This elective is open to undergraduate medical students in Years 1 and 2 at the University of Alberta.

Please note that our Deaf Stories and Medical Ableism event is open to ALL students (including those not part of the ASL elective). This 2 hour session can be used for credit towards the Community Engagement - Mix and Match elective.
Please note that to receive credit for the ASL elective, students must attend a total of 4 sessions, with the first and last sessions as mandatory.
