Elective Years 1 & 2: Emergency Department Experience

Overview:

Gives you a first-hand look at a city emergency department and exposes you to its functionality and operations. When on shift as housestaff, you will have a better appreciation of how patients arrive on your service.

Objectives:

KNOWLEDGE TO GAIN:

  • describe patient flow through ED (triage, work-up and disposition of patients)
  • describe roles of various health care workers; problems encountered in the ED

SKILLS TO ACQUIRE:

  • practice how to properly work with the ED staff.

ATTITUDES TO LEARN:

  • demonstrate ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
