This elective will allow observation and appreciation for inner-city health, addictions medicine, and the comprehensive care of marginalized populations. Students will work with 1 preceptor on a weekly basis during Radius’ evening clinic, from 4 to 8pm. During this experience, consideration for and discussion around social determinants of health will be explored.

Objectives:

To allow students to better understand and appreciate the comprehensive care of marginalized populations in an inner city setting, including:

  • An appreciation for the social determinants of health
  • An introduction to caring for a population that faces barriers to health care, with consideration for ethnicity, socioeconomic status, lack of appropriate housing, addictions, mental illness, literacy and education levels, and social isolation.
  • Challenging the student’s personal prejudice and biases.
  • Equipping students with experiences to mitigate the acquisition of systemic biases as they progress in their training
  • The impact of a positive therapeutic relationship in caring for marginalized populations
