Overview:

With the preceptor, students will design their elective to gain an overview of laboratory practice, correlating test results with clinical findings, developing an understanding of appropriate laboratory ordering practices, and experiencing first-hand:

  • Surgical pathology specimens (both gross and microscopic), developing a surgical report pertinent to directing patient care.
  • Studying cytology preparations, understanding their limitations and relevance, and learning the practices which will optimize their value.
  • Reviewing gross and microscopic findings, and developing a clinically relevant report.
  • Collecting bone marrow specimens and reviewing marrow slides and peripheral blood smears in correlation with clinical findings.
  • Reviewing the complexities and intricacies of a high volume microbiology laboratory to gain an understanding of what, when, and how information is developed for clinical use.
  • Viewing a high volume clinical chemistry laboratory, interpreting protein electrophoreses, and correlating abnormal biochemistry findings with clinical data.
Objectives:

Students participating in this elective at DynaLife can experience a general overview of Laboratory Medicine or focus on a highly specific area, predicated on their interests. This may occur in either the Core Base Lab Facility, in one of the hospital laboratories, or in both.
