Overview: Students will be assigned to a preceptor out of the UAH. Students will get exposure to the OR, clinic, rounds, wards, call, and consults and can expect to see cases relating to head injury, spinal injury, cerebrovascular disease, acute spinal cord problems, brain tumours, headache, and back pain. Teaching is delivered by both the preceptor and resident team as time allows. Students can request a pediatric preceptor, if desired.
Objectives: Depending on their preceptor's sub-specialty and exposure to the resident team, students should be able to assess, diagnose and treat patients presenting with headache, back pain, coma, acute visual disturbances, injury to the head or spine, hemiplegia and stroke. Students will learn about head and spinal cord injury, brain death, stroke and transient ischemic attacks, central disc prolapse/cord compression, and tumors of the brain and spinal cord. Students should leave their elective with the skills to calculate the Glasgow Coma Score and how to immobilize a spine.
