What is an HSEMS?
An HSEMS is a framework for the development, communication, and management of healthy, safe, and environmentally responsible activities. The university is committed to an HSEMS that supports preventative and responsive attitudes and behaviors at all levels of management, supervision, and staffing.
The cornerstone of the university's HSEMS is the Health, Safety, and Environment Policy. "Assignments of accountabilities" establish the HSEMS framework, while procedures and support documents (such as manuals, guidelines, and informational documents) provide the details.
How do I implement the HSEMS in my unit?
Everyone has a role to play in implementing health, safety, and environment requirements and best practices at the University of Alberta.
To get started, review recordings from the "Building a Safety Culture" lunch and learn series, held from February to December 2022. Each session explored a new element, reviewed lessons learned from past incidents, and offered practical strategies for enhancing safety in your unit.
You can also find instructions ("steps") to implement each element in your workplace here. Each step corresponds with a new element of the HSEMS and offers actions and resources to turn principles into practice.
