Faculty Strategic Plan

Brenda Hemmelgarn

Vision 2025

Late in the spring of 2020, 22 people from across our Faculty began the work needed to refresh the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's strategic plan. The efforts of this dynamic group—representing all career stages and drawing on diverse expertise in health sciences education, research and clinical care—helped us initiate our sketch of a roadmap for what we’re calling Vision 2025.

From June through December, we moved through several phases. During the initial intensive engagement phase, we heard suggestions, feedback and questions from hundreds of faculty, staff, learners and alumni, key partners from the health foundations and the communities we serve. This was followed by a facilitated refinement phase and design phase.

By the end of 2020, we had completed our initial roadmap for Vision 2025. We are now in the beginnings of implementation.

Our vision, mission and values

Based on the input of hundreds of community members, Vision 2025 reflects the shared vision, mission and values that unite us as we move forward together.

Our vision: Health and wellness of all through excellence in education, discovery and clinical care

Our mission: To serve the public through partnerships, leadership, and innovation in education, research and health care

Our core values (“we proceed”):

Well-being: Committing to caring for the physical and mental health of each other and our communities.
Excellence: Striving for results in research, education & clinical care for the greatest impact.
Professionalism: Approaching all aspects of research, education & clinical care with integrity, respect and social accountability.
Curiosity and Creativity: Encouraging a culture of discovery and innovation.
Engagement for Collaboration: Seeking and integrating meaningful input from each other and our partners in communities.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Investing in an inclusive environment that recognizes and respects the dignity and humanity of individuals and communities.

Vision 2025 is also built on the deep and rich relationships we continue to nurture with our partners.

What are my commitments as Dean?

When we embarked on the path to Vision 2025, I made several commitments that continue to underpin our work as we carry out our plan:

  • I commit to putting the patient and our communities at the centre of our strategic plan, training future leaders and health science professionals so the communities we serve can live fuller, healthier lives.
  • I commit to excellence in education, research and clinical care.
  • And with a clear focus on social accountability, I commit to work with all of you to realize equity, diversity and inclusivity throughout all of our learning and research environments.

This isn't my plan. It is our plan

Everyone in our faculty, alongside our partners, has been a part of co-creating our roadmap. Together we have set meaningful metrics on our path, and together, we are now implementing our strategic plan. While our work on the plan is key to our Faculty, it represents only about 20 per cent of what we do as we maintain our focus on the rest of the important work we continue together.

Thank you for coming together to embrace this period of transformation. Each one of you has made Vision 2025 stronger and better.
