Climate Change and Health in Somalia (Zoom)

with Léo Tremblay and Emmanuel Yussuf, MSc

9:40 am - 10:10 am, Feb. 8, 2024

Over the years, Somalia has been affected by numerous challenges, climate change being the most recent cause of conflict, displacement and health effects to its population. With the increase in global warming, we expect an increase in extreme weather events, which have both direct and indirect impacts on health -- putting pressure on medical systems in place. For us to make a difference in Somalia's health sector, we need to have an understanding of the challenges they face and build up on opportunities available while understanding how climate impacts the country.

Léo Tremblay is the lead of the Humanitarian Action on Climate and Environment (HACE) initiative and has experience on assignments with MSF Canada.

Emmanuel Yussuf is a meteorologist and climate expert working with MSF’s Climate Smart initiative in Nairobi.  He is a young climate scientist and advocate for climate-related issues with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and a Master of Science in Climate Change. His professional journey includes roles as a forecaster and meteorologist at the Kenya Meteorological Department, and as a scientific officer for the Kenya Meteorological Society. Emmanuel has led research focusing on air pollution, climate change, and its relationship with pediatric respiratory infections. Driven by a fervent interest in the intersection of climate change and health, he aims to inspire and foster solutions to address the challenges posed by this existential threat.
