7th Annual Global Health Fair 2023
The annual Global Health Fair focuses on global health education and research relating to biomedical science, individuals and communities. The Global Health Fair provides an opportunity for researchers, clinicians and educators to share their medical knowledge and scholarship on various topics related to global health, as well as provide an opportunity for networking and bridge-building across disciplines. As with previous Fairs, the 7th Annual Global Health Fair will be held in conjunction and in collaboration with the Biomedical Global Health Research Network (BGHRN) and University of Alberta International (UAI) International Week events Feb. 6 - 10, 2023.
Our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, FCAHS who will speak on Allyship in Global Health. Global health is a field that was born out of colonialism. Even today, it is neither diverse nor truly global. Every aspect of global health is dominated by individuals and institutions in high-income countries. So, if global health has to be reimagined, people that typically hold power and privilege must master the art of allyship, where they see their primary role as allies or accomplices rather than leaders. Dr. Pai recommends that participants read in advance the article Disrupting Global Health: From Allyship to Collective Liberation which offers additional context for this presentation.
Dr. Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, FCAHS is a Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology & Global Health at McGill University, Montreal. He is the Associate Director of the McGill International TB Centre. Dr. Pai did his medical training and community medicine residency in Vellore, India. His research focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, especially in high-burden countries like India and South Africa.
