Office of International Programs

The Office of International Programs in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry develops, facilitates and strengthens strategic international relationships and partnerships that support the faculty's goals and advance its vision, mission and values.

Working closely with departments and units across the faculty, the office's objective is to develop vibrant international strategic partnerships in education, research and clinical service, which enhance faculty programs, benefit our partners and contribute to improved global health.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is one of Canada's premiere health-sciences institutes, and in recent years has ranked among the top 50 medical schools in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Our faculty has achieved international excellence in several areas that were identified by a rigorous external review. These include but are not limited to:

  • Diabetes/obesity
  • Motor control and rehabilitation
  • Protein structure, function and design
  • Transplantation
  • Virology

International Projects: Dare to make a difference

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry prides itself on being a model global citizen by contributing to the health of people in other areas of the world. Flagship international projects include the development of medical schools in Kenya and Nepal:

  • Aga Khan University in Nairobi (AKUN), Kenya - The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has made a significant, ongoing commitment to train doctors in Kenya. Two of our faculty members have played central roles in the establishment of a medical school at Aga Khan University and the development of the school's medical curriculum. In addition, we are contributing to the development of a world-class cardiac sciences training program at the AKUN and the AKU Hospital in Nairobi.
  • Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Katmandu, Nepal - Several members of our faculty are helping to build a high-calibre medical training program in Nepal that serves the people of Nepal, with a particular focus on rural populations. Watch a video on the Nepal pproject.
